Hi, I’m Alice Bell. I’m a former academic and journalist, now working for a climate charity in London.
Global warming is something I’ve been aware of most of my life. We studied the greenhouse effect in school and the UN talks were on kids' TV. The cloud of climate change has always been there, even if most of the time I've avoided looking at it.
Then, about five years ago, I was asked to put together an undergraduates course on energy and climate change. Up till then, I'd studied climate change as a case study in the politics of science and technology, but this was the first time I had to sit and engage with the issue in detail, and for weeks on end. I became absorbed by the issue, obsessed even.
Learning more about the history of climate change really helped me get my head round it. It also gave me hope. I hope if helps you too.
